* Bumping….is a method of bypassing or ‘picking’ a traditional lock cylinder by utilizing a specially cut key that allows a technician/criminal/punk teenager to jog the pins in that cylinder by quickly and repeatedly ‘rapping’ on the head of the key with a small hammer or other instrument in hopes of momentarily finding the shear line of the true key and allowing access. Although not a method typically used by criminals because of several variables that might interfere with a successful ‘bump’ bypass---and the fact that it makes quite a bit of noise---‘bumping’ has become an issue in recent years due to the availability of ‘bump key sets’ on-line and the media attention given to that availability.
